International Day of Journalists’ Solidarity

Today is International Day of Journalists’ Solidarity. The holiday was confirmed in 1958 in Bucharest at the 4th conference of Journalists’ International Union. Delegates of the congress stated, that on this day journalists of all countries and publications should display unity, especially in defending their own rights.
In 1943, on September 8 Czechoslovak reporter, writer anti-fascist Julius Fučík, was subjected to death penalty. He is famous over the world with his book “Notes from the Gallows” (Czech: Reportáž psaná na oprátce), which was written in one of Prague jails. After his death the book has been translated into 70 languages, and since 1958, the day of the death of Fučík began to be celebrated as International Day of Journalists’ Solidarity.
At the end of the 20th century September 8 was declared International Journalists’ Day by UNO.
